The RTB Project: A Lingua Franca That Drives Growth in Programmatic

A “Lingua Franca” is a common language enabling people from various countries and cultures to understand each other. For instance, Latin imposed itself as the common language throughout Europe during the old days of the Pax Romana and French was used widely across diplomatic missions until the beginning of the 20th century. Today, English is the uncontested universal language of commerce, trade and business for the ease of exchanging information and making communication standardized.

The same purpose underlies the creation of the RTB project, as its mission is officially to “spur greater growth in the RTB marketplace by providing open industry standards for communication between buyers of advertising and sellers of publisher inventory.”

However, despite all the buzz around programmatic, there is still confusion around what the term means and implies. Few know what it stands for, and even fewer know how to use it for media buying.

Programmatic Direct: Automating The Handshake Between Advertisers And Publishers

In our series on programmatic, so far we have talked about what programmatic media buying is and the various ways in which advertisers can buy ad inventory programmatically. We have dived into Real-Time Bidding Open Auction (RTB) and Private Marketplaces (PMP), both of which make use of auctions that happen in real-time. In this installment, we will discuss Programmatic Direct, an arm of programmatic media buying that doesn’t involve a real-time auction.

Private Marketplaces: Welcome to the VIP Club

Last week we discussed in detail how the RTB auction process works. This week, as part of our on-going series on Programmatic, we take a deep dive into the world of private marketplaces.

Private Marketplaces, or PMPs, are invite-only marketplaces that allow high-caliber publishers to set aside certain ad inventory packages and sell them to a select buyer or group of buyers through a private auction mechanism, transacted through Deal IDs. Deal IDs can be understood as a unique code that is generated to represent the negotiated terms of the deal between the buyer and the seller.

Our new blog post takes you through a deep-dive into the world of private marketplaces!

How Does the Mobile RTB Auction Process Work?

Even as Real Time Bidding (RTB) continues its exponential growth, there is still curiosity among mobile advertisers to fully understand what programmatic advertising really is. One of the most misunderstood concepts in programmatic is the RTB process, which is often confused to being synonymous with what programmatic stands for.

For the uninitiated, RTB is a type of programmatic buying where the buying and selling of online ad impressions is done in real time for the transacting of one single impression at a time. This happens in milliseconds, on average around 200 milliseconds to be precise, before a page loads.

But, how exactly does a mobile RTB auction work? Read on as we take you through a deep dive into the world of an RTB auction process.
